PENELOPE'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS
"This is not going to be 45 seconds, I can say that right now. Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one. Thank you so much to the Academy. I want to share this with my fellow nominees and with the amazing ensemble of actors that I had the privilege to work with in this movie. Thank you, Woody, for trusting me with this beautiful character. Thank for you having written over all these years some of the greatest characters for women. And I cannot talk about great female characters without thanking my friend Pedro Almodóvar for having made me part of so many of his adventures. Thank you, Bigas Luna, Fernando Trueba, for giving me my first movies. Thank you, Harvey Weinstein. I wanted to dedicate this to my parents and to my brother and sister, to my friend Robert Garlock, who is not with us anymore, and to everyone who has helped me from the beginning and you know who you are and I thank you from my heart.
I grew up in a place called Alcobendas, where this was not a very realistic dream. And I, always on the night of the Academy Awards, I stay up to watch the show and I always felt that this was, this ceremony was a moment of unity for the world because art, in any form, is and has been and will always be our universal language and we should do everything we can, everything we can, to protect its survival. So I thank you so much and I have to say something in Spanish, because everyone: Todos los que desde España ahora estén compartiendo este momento conmigo y sientan que esto también es de ellos, se los dedico. Y a todos los actores de mi país. Muchisimas gracias."

Carnival
These days, Andalusian people, specially those from Cadiz, celebrate Carnival. This event takes place a week before Lent. Each city in Spain has a slightly different way to celebrate this festival. The most glamorous of the carnaval celebrations is the one taking place in the Canary Islands. The carnival here resembles the one in Rio. The Carnival in Cadiz has a healthy dose of music and humour. It ends with the burial of the sardine. But did you know that a very famous carnival is celebrated in Britain each year? Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event which takes place on the streets of Notting Hill, London, UK each August, over two days (Sunday and the following bank holiday), since 1965. It is led by members of the Caribbean population, many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s. The carnival has attracted up to 2 million people in the past, making it the second largest street festival in the world after Rio.

Friday the 13th
The fear of Friday 13th is called "Paraskevidekatriaphobia". But why is this date unlucky? Nobody knows. The really strange thing is that most of the people who believe the day is unlucky offer no explanation at all, logical or illogical. According to experts this superstition is the most widespread in the United States. On this day some people won't go to work or get married. Number thirteen has always been asociated to bad luck. For many this is the day to avoid! It is said that a child born on this day is doomed to misfortune. You shouldn't move to a new home or new job on this day and be careful to eat eggs laid on Friday the 13th. And of course don't take a journey!!! Fishermen say that "a Friday's sail, always fails".
A similar superstition in Spain is Tuesday the 13th. Are you superstitious?

Saint Valentine: the martyr of love
Next Saturday people in love will celebrate Saint Valentine's Day. The 14th of February is a time for the celebration of "Romantic love". As the day approaches, people try to find the right card, buy flowers or chocolate or maybe make a reservation for a candlelight dinner. The sending of Valentines (love cards) is very popular in the United Kingdom. The Greeting Card Association estimates that about one billion cards are sent each year on Valentine's Day.
But who was Saint Valentine? The legends dates back to the time of the Roman Empire when marriages were forbidden by Emperor Claudius. Watch this video about his true story.

A trip to London
I took this picture in my last trip to London. This is my favourite city in the world. I love its character and though the weather can be unpredictable, I always find it fascinating. You can find people all around the world and of course it is always nice to practise English. We all know that British food is not the best, but nowadays you can taste the best of British cuisine in the socalled gastropubs. They are traditional pubs serving homemade and highquality dishes. I love going shopping in central London. You can spend a whole day shopping in Oxford Street, but my favourite places are Candem Lock and Convent Garden. You can also find interesting things in Portobello market, Notting Hill. The public trasport is excellent. You can move all around the city by underground. If you are staying for one week, buy the 7-day oyster card for areas 1 and 2. If you don't have much money stay in one of the many B&Bs, they offer accomodation and traditional full English breakfast. If you want to go sightseeing, don't miss the change of guard in Buckigham palace, Trafalgar square, the Tower of London or Tower Bridge. if you are not afraid of heights, go on a ride on the London Eye. People say that on a cloudless day you can see Windsor castle. If you travel to London in summer, don't miss one of the performances at the new Globe, a reconstruction of Shakespeare's original theatre.
